Revitalizing a Proven Favorite – Azospirillum brasilense

Have you ever heard someone say sometimes, what’s old can find new purpose? In the case of Azospirillum brasilense it couldn’t be truer. In the late 90’s and early aughts, the bacteria showed mounds of promise for enhanced root growth in turf grass. Formulation and delivery made it an economic challenge to incorporate into a turf management system.
Although Azospirillum has been a well known bacterium in the turf industry for decades, new formulation and packaging from 3BarBio have completely reinvented how it can be delivered, stored, and activated, making it more accessible, efficient, and powerful than ever. The new product is called Azo Root. “When the bacteria in Azo Root (Azospirillum brasilense) attach to the roots, it colonizes producing growth hormones and fixing atmospheric nitrogen to enhance rooting,” says Phil Dwyer, PhD turf grass scientist. “This relationship benefits both the plant and bacterium, enabling robust root growth, which is essential for turf health, drought resistance, and faster recovery.”
In its earlier iterations, Azospirillum brasilense delivery posed challenges. The product was shipped on ice to maintain its live microbial content, which limited its shelf life and made transportation both cumbersome and costly. Customers had to use it quickly, often within a week, to harness its full effectiveness. Although this method worked, it created inefficiencies that prevented the product from reaching its market potential.

Breathing New Life into Azospirillum brasilense

Teaming up with Harrell’s, 3BarBio developed the Azo Root formulation – distinctly named after its key ingredient, Azospirillum brasilense. The new formulation can be shipped in a dormant, freeze-dried form. “This unique package allows you to activate it when you need it, so that it performs for you on demand,” Dwyer says. Turf grass managers can store the product until it’s ready for use, activating it for maximum concentration and efficiency. This convenient, on-demand activation makes Azo Root not just effective but also economical, expanding its reach across the turf industry.
Azo Root was proven in research trials, including at Virginia Tech, confirming significant improvements in rooting and overall turf health. Last summer, Harrell’s worked with several golf courses, where turf managers reported healthier, more resilient greens and fairways. They noticed greater root mass and enhanced turf health, on greens and fairways, highlighting Azo Root’s long-term benefits and impact on overall turf quality.
While Azo Root is currently popular in golf and other turf applications, it has potential for other uses. “We are seeing great responses by growers cultivating horticultural crops, flowers, and woody ornamentals,” Dwyer says.
Azo Root’s story is one of revitalization, showing how a well-established product can evolve and improve through technological advancements. Now, turf managers can leverage decades of research and proven science in a form that’s easier to use, more cost-effective, and more impactful than ever.
